Mr Gent

Good morning from Newmarket. It was lovely to see Caen Na Coille make a promising debut last night, finishing a good third behind two potentially useful fillies. Hopefully she can build on this in the future.

Now onto matters closer to hand. We are heading back to Wolverhampton this evening with Mr Gent in the 6.30, a five-furlong novice for older horses.

Putting him in this race is undoubtedly a slightly risky move, as he has never raced at below six and a half furlongs and he put in a terribly lacklustre effort on his comeback at Kempton in January. However, we noticed on the morning of entries for this race that it did not look overly strong on paper – in fact even with a mark of only 65 we are the top rated horse in the field. Whether Mr Gent can run to his rating over this trip is a question mark of course, and David Barron’s Poets Pride and Ray Guest’s Minuty provide stiff enough opposition.  However, with handicap options over his usual trip looking fiercely competitive at present, and his work pleasing me, I thought it was worth gambling and having a go over this experimental distance. Paul Mulrennan takes the ride.

All the best,
Ed.
