Global Applause
It has been another sunny morning at HQ and it has been another busy morning at La Grange with 4 runners leaving for racecourse duties today. Such has been the impact of the recent dry spell; a decision was made last night to water the course at Newmarket to preserve the good to firm conditions. We trainers tend to obsess about ground and knowing how hard it is to please everyone, we do so in the best interests of the horses in our care. I felt it too firm for Amplification last night and I decided to wait for another day. While those that ran did not trouble the judge, they all performed with a degree of merit and I am sure will come forward for the racecourse experience.
Global Spirit is my first runner today at Newmarket in the 7f ‘rewards4racing.com Handicap (Div II)’ (2.10). It will be his first start as a 3yr old and in handicap company on turf. After finishing 2nd at Wolverhampton in November, he ran a little flat next time out at Lingfield. Following this I decided to give him a break. He seems to have benefitted from this, and while he should come on plenty for today, I am hoping he will run well.
Global Applause runs at Newbury in the 6f ‘Starlight Brightening Lives Handicap’ (2.35). He has always been a good horse at home, and after a very good 2yr old season, he ran only 3 times as a 3yr old, and while not winning, he performed with credit on each run. His first this season at Newbury in April over 5f. He has come forward nicely for this run, and today I think the better ground and the step up to 6f will suit. While it is a very decent looking field, I am hoping he can go close.
Next to the starting gate is Amazing Red at Newmarket in the 1m6f ‘Edmondson Hall Solicitors & Sports Lawyers Handicap’ (3.55). Red returned to winning ways last time over 2m at Kempton winning convincingly at the line. I don’t anticipate the return to turf and a slight drop back in trip will inconvenience Red too much. Although, this is a step up in grade to 0-105 company, I hope he can continue his progress as a stayer and give him a solid EW chance.
Finally, for today, I run Global Giant at Newmarket in the 1m ‘Pegasus Profiles Flying Horse Novice Stakes’ (4.25). He is a horse we have always liked at home, and in his light 2yr old campaign he confirmed this on the track with a gutsy maiden win over 7f on the July course at HQ. Today he tackles some well-regarded types in what looks to be a quality event for the grade. It will be his first try at a mile, and on pedigree this could bring some improvement. he has progressed nicely at home and I hope he has a solid EW chance against strong opposition.
All the best
