Toro Dorado

Good morning from Newmarket. We have been greeted by a rather grey and overcast morning, but there is not much rain about which is causing the ground to turn fast in various parts of the country, including here. As an example of how troublesome this can be, we had to take out our intended runner in the mile and a quarter maiden last night, Triple Genius. We will now have to now try and come up with an alternative plan for the horse, but with fast ground everywhere and limited opportunities on the AW at this time of year, it can prove a headache. A drop of serious rain would be helpful for a lot of our string!

The ground should hold no fears, however, for our intended runner at Newmarket this afternoon Toro Dorado. The three-year-old son of Toronado runs in the seven-furlong 0-70 handicap at 2.00. We have played around a good bit on trip with this horse, as he is bred for middle distances, but is fresh and keen in his work and on the track, and shows a fair bit of speed. We might well be getting the trip completely wrong, but after travelling sweetly over a mile at Redcar last time and looking sure to go close, he weakened badly and appeared to not get home - and his jockey advised trying seven-furlongs in the aftermath.

So that is what we are doing and it is handy that we can ty it out on our doorstep. This is a typically competitive race and, whist we don’t think we are too badly handicapped on 63, there are several unexposed sorts in this race who might have a little more up their sleeve. This is clearly a slightly experimental run, and we also reach for a first time visor to try and encourage further improvement, but hopefully this talented individual will consent to put his best foot forward. If he does so, then he should be capable of running respectably. Liam Keniry will be doing the steering.

All the best,
Ed.
