Maqaader leading Global Warning on the grass
Good morning from Newmarket, where the July Sale and July Meeting are keeping the town abuzz with action. We have had a good few days in terms of results on the track, so it would be nice to keep the momentum going this afternoon. We saddle a runner apiece at Newmarket and York.
At 2.40, Manjaam lines up in a 3yo+ mile and a half 0-100 contest. There is little doubt that this is a competitive field, despite there being only six runners, and we also had the option of going to Ascot for a race over further. What swung us towards York was the fact that Manjaam produced such an excellent performance there to win in May. On that occasion he defeated the former Gr.2 King Edward VII Stakes winner Across The Stars, and it probably represented a career best effort. He has since run down the field at Royal Ascot, and remains four pounds above the mark he was on at York previously. As such, we have enlisted the services of talented apprentice Lewis Edmunds to take off three pounds, and hopefully that little weight advantage will make a significant difference. The race is full of York regulars that love the track but, from Manjaam’s perspective, the trip, track and ground are all ideal, so fingers crossed he can run well.
In the 4.10 at Newmarket we run Maqadeer in a warm-looking seven-furlong maiden. A juvenile son of the 2014 Eclipse winner Mukhadram, he is out of the mile winner Burnt Fingers, from a family that contains a good deal of black-type winners. He is showing up nicely in his work, and it has been encouraging to see that Mukhadram is already of the mark in his first season, from a small sample of runners. It is impossible to be too expectant in this type of race, with a long list of potentially exciting rivals, but we hope to see an encouraging first run from this colt.
All the best,
Ed.
