Global Angel
It is looking like the St Leger will be run on ground that will be very hard going if the forecast for today is right. Although the ground at Town Moor dried out to soft there yesterday there is 7mm of rain predicted for tonight which will more than likely see heavy come back into the going description.
Unfortunately there is rain in the forecast here at HQ for the rest of the week, we have the Newmarket Open Day here on Sunday and I really hope it stays dry. There are a whole host of big names lined up for the Jockeys and Trainers show jumping and after last night’s practise Frankie Dettori and James Doyle have been installed as favourites. Andrea Atzeni was celebrating his big win in the Irish Champion on Saturday and unlike Doyle who is taking this competition very seriously, he opted out of the practise session along with last year’s winner Pat Cosgrave and Adam Kirby.
We had a good double at Kempton on Saturday with Fabulous Red and Tadleel winning the two Nurseries there. Both showed a fantastic attitude and I hope they can keep progressing. The handicapper has not been kind in regard to Tadleel and he has put him up seven pounds for his length win but he is a scoped sort who is improving with racing.
Agar’s Plough ran a fine race at Ascot and he showed signs of inexperience when hitting the front, he was beaten by a promising sort and it should only be a matter of time before he breaks his Maiden. Sir Gnet was second at Wolverhampton and he wasn’t able to take advantage of a good draw when he was a step slowly away at the start. We will step him up to a mile and a half now and he is another that should be winning soon. Indian Warrior found a lot of trouble at Wolverhampton and this run can be forgotten whilst Mulzim was disappointing and we will drop him back to six furlongs next time.
I run three at Leicester and then Newcastle this evening. Global Angel is a late maturing sort who will be better for the experience and he runs in a warm Novice at Leicester. Lynwood Gold was impressive when knowing his job at Epsom and Morning Wonder was second to a very tough filly on debut. Setting Sail is a well-bred Godolphin newcomer to note and Future Score and Regal Director are two other well-bred types who might be nice types going forward.
We have been frustrated by the rain with Amlad and so we have sent him up to Newcastle to contest a trappy handicap at 6:45. Humble Hero has been well supported and he is very lightly raced, this is a drop in grade for him and he looks the horse we have to beat. Doctor Bartolo and New Society were both second last time and can’t be discounted whilst Voski needs to come back to form. Our horse was badly drawn last time and wasn’t seen to best effect when having to come from the rear at Pontefract. He is honest and will run his race and we just hope there is not one in there that finds a lot of improvement.
Sileel has run well on the all-weather twice and her disappointments since her debut have come on soft ground. The handicapper has given her a chance and she holds decent each way claims in the 7:15. She does not have to make the running and has run well twice before getting a lead but it is a competitive little race. Maulesden May is on a roll and is an improved performer recently but she hasn’t won at Gosforth Park in five attempts. Struck By The Moon has been well beaten in three starts but has shown some promise and gets in off a very low mark of 61 and Alfa Queen is another who has only had the three starts. Fire Leopard has been in good form and although she was well beaten last time, it was by an improving horse.
