Red Secret

Good afternoon from Newmarket. Our quiet week continues with just the single runner at Leicester today, although things are promising to hot up a little over the weekend.

Today’s runner is the Ronnie Arculli-owned Red Secret, who gets his second taste of racecourse action in the mile and a quarter three-year-old plus novice at 3.20. A backward son of Lemon Drop Kid, he is out of the Street Cry mare Parley, who was a mile maiden winner at Wolverhampton during her racing days, and generally hails from a family that excels at around a mile to a mile and a quarter.

However, this horse has been exceptionally slow to come to hand, clearly needing more time – and probably more distance – than the majority of the family. He finally made it onto a racecourse last month at Chelmsford, where he pleased me by running on from the rear of the field to take a respectable seventh. This looks a logical next step for the horse, as there aren’t too many runners and Leicester will be a nice place to introduce him to grass racing. There are likely to be one or two in here that are simply too good for us at this stage, but Red Secret is starting to get the hang of things and hopefully we can see promising signs once more. He remains a long-term project, but there should be some fun to be had with him further down the line. Hayley Turner takes the ride.

Best wishes,
Ed.
