Mr Gent
Good morning from Newmarket.
I was delighted with our two runners at Nottingham yesterday. Amazing Red gave it his very best in the Listed Further Flight Stakes, ultimately just failing to get past the improving Elegiac of Mark Johnston’s, and it might have even been a career best. Later on, it was good to see the three-year-old Valence show encouragement on his seasonal debut, and he looks like a horse that can continue to progress the further he goes this year.
We have also made some declarations today for the Greenham meeting at Newbury on Saturday. Roxy Art will run in the Fred Darling – which will be a tall order but it will be very interesting to see how she gets on – whilst we run a three in the divisions of the mile maiden, so it promises to be a busy day.
That is for the weekend though, and today we have just a single runner, Mr Gent in the 4.40 at Chelmsford. The son of Society Rock has been a real disappointment for us, as he was rated 80 less than a year ago but is now down to 55 and apparently regressing all the time.
He is sales bound shortly, and we have been experimenting with trip and headgear in a bid to try and improve his performances. We go back to seven furlongs today and reapply blinkers, in the hope that they might liven him up. He continues to work reasonably well and has the talent to be involved, but what he will produce on the track remains open to question. Rab Havlin is tasked with trying to coax the very best out of him this afternoon.
All the best,
Ed.
