Global Express
Good afternoon from Newmarket. We shaved the crossbar a couple of times over the weekend, but hopefully we can start the new week off on a better note. Our only runner is Global Express, who tries his luck in the mile and a quarter 0-75 handicap at 8.20 at Wolverhampton.
This horse has been something of a disappointment to this point, as he remains a maiden despite showing initial promise – notably when second on his only run last year. He has generally disappointed this year yet, with just five career starts to his name, he is far from fully exposed and his latest run at Salisbury was a write-off due to significant rain turning the ground far more testing than he appreciates.
We have had some trouble establishing his ideal trip, as he has a mix and match sort of pedigree. His best sibling is Misheer, who won the Gr.2 Cherry Hinton Stakes and was second in the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes over six-furlongs, but there are also significantly greater stamina elements to the family. For now we are at a mile and a quarter, but there is always the chance he could step back to a mile at some point.
Also of interest based on pedigree analysis is that a few of his siblings have excelled on artificial surfaces, so it is hoped that switching from the turf could prove the making of him.
Two runs back at Haydock he really started to suggest he was going in the right direction and it is hoped that today’s sounder surface can allow him to show his true colours. Tonight’s race is devilishly competitive, and we are dealing with a horse who has essentially not lived up to expectations, but we must not write him off just yet. Fingers crossed for a a good run. Gerald Mosse will be doing the steering.
