Colourful Career was our last runner in 2017 and the son of More Than Ready ensured we ended the year on a winning note. He went into the race with some solid form for the level to his name but he was stepping up to ten furlongs for the first time which was a slight unknown.
Adam Kirby rode our gelding positively from the outset and was soon dictating proceedings at the front of the field. He quickened the tempo approaching the two furlong pole and looked to have put the race to bed approaching the final furlong. Colourful Career idled in front late on and edged to his right but he was always doing enough to hold Relevant by three quarters of a length with Line Of Beauty back in third.
Now he has broken his Maiden tag Colourful Career will head back into handicap company and he is likely to stick to trips around ten furlongs. He was entitled to win this race on ratings and the handicapper has left his mark of 70 unchanged. He showed a good turn of foot when making his winning move and he should be competitive when he moves back into handicaps.
Congratulations to the Melbourne 10 who leased Colourful Career for the day as many members of the syndicate were at Lingfield for the afternoon’s racing. We wish you luck in your pursuit of the all-weather Owner’s Championship. We ended 2017 with 52 winners for the year and with some promising horses in the yard we hope we can build on this in 2018. Happy New Year to everyone and let us hope that 2018 provides as much excitement on the racecourse as 2017 did.
